@excellent-so/kit

The look every free tool here shares: CSS variables and plain classes, light and dark, no dependencies.

The problem

Most of the tools I give away are a single HTML viewer that a command serves. I wanted them to look like one family without copying CSS between repos by hand. So the look is a package: tokens as CSS variables and a few dozen plain classes, light and dark, comfortable and compact, with no framework and no build step.

Get it

npm i @excellent-so/kit

Version 0.2.1 · MIT license

In a page
<link rel="stylesheet" href="node_modules/@excellent-so/kit/fonts.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="node_modules/@excellent-so/kit/tokens.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="node_modules/@excellent-so/kit/kit.css">
<script src="node_modules/@excellent-so/kit/kit.js" defer></script>

<button class="ex-btn">Run the check</button>
<span class="ex-badge ex-badge--verified">Verified</span>
In a single-file viewer
<style>
/* excellent-kit:begin */
/* excellent-kit:end */
</style>

npx @excellent-so/kit sync viewer/index.html
npx @excellent-so/kit sync viewer/index.html --check

How to use it

  1. Install it: npm i @excellent-so/kit. The CSS and kit.js need only a browser; the excellent-kit command needs Node 20 or later.
  2. In a page, link fonts.css, tokens.css and kit.css, put ex-page on <body> and use the classes.
  3. In a single-file viewer that can't link other files, put the two markers inside its <style> and run sync. It changes only the text between them.
  4. Add sync --check to CI. It exits 1 when a page's copy of the kit is out of date.
  5. Open styleguide/index.html in the package to see every part, live.

Where it came from

It's the look of Excellent's own admin and app, and the kit behind screen-map, selfdocs, pressroom and x-likes.

With Tailwind, a chart or a native app, tokens.json has every value for light, dark and compact. --fonts embeds Geist and Geist Mono as data, about 190 KB, for a viewer that can't serve files.

Version 0.2.1 is on npm, and the repo went public on November 6, 2026.
